Form follows function and so too does materiality. Then there is the bit about intentionality and such. The layers of meaning work hand in hand with the literal layers of media and materials that I employ in my work. As they stand, now, my chosen materials are a combination of mostly dry media such as colored pencil, ink, and other types of pens and markers, and wet media like acrylic paint or watercolors and decorative papers, textiles, gold and silver foils, card stock, glitter, and glittered paper. Each material is used for reasons specific to the individual work’s function as an object and as of my work’s dichotomic push-pull. I use these tools to indulge the viewer’s visual desire and to coax them to further investigate the people presented before them.

I’ve discovered over the years of making this work that images of my work can create a bit of a disservice to the dimensionality and materiality of the work. I of course feel like this means everyone should just see it in person then, but I too understand that this is not always immediately possible. I also know that people love to know about artists processes and how the works are made. Because I understand these facts I’ve decided to provide small glimpses into how works are made. Here you will find time-lapse videos of my color pencil, and collage processes as well as still images of me working in the studio also. Like, real images of me in the studio, not me posing for the camera. I hope this provides insight into the work and if you have questions please feel free to ask me about anything. I am an open book.
